Action Research Wonderings

  1. Through learning about inquiry and thinking about different ‘wondering’ questions, I have been able to focus more on individual aspects of the classroom more than I was able to before. My ‘wondering’ deals with first graders who struggle in fluency and whether or not learning centers help with their comprehension of this or not. I decided to pick this topic because I have noticed in my PDS that many children are having problems with this and need extra help/attention in pronouncing words and letter sounds. This ‘wondering’ has allowed me to pay closer attention when children mispronounce words and has encouraged me to spend extra time stressing fluency while going over spelling words with some students in my PDS classroom. This topic is also very important to me because it has come to my attention recently that my 9th grade sister is having the same problems. She has always received high grades in school, but recently I have noticed how she misspells and mispronounces words that as a 9th grader should not be happening. Both her teachers and my parents have never focused on this before but are just now realizing how poorly some of her fluency in pronouncing words and letter sounds really is. In the future, I want to be able to recognize when a student is struggling in this area and be able to incorporate the best strategies into my lessons so that the students falling behind will be able to excel.

  2. Your story is very touching to my heart and very sad. I actually almost shed a tear while reading your submission. These days we dont see people that write as passionatly as you do. I think you should drop the education major and pick up writing. It was beautiful and heartfelt and I commend you Gina.
